The Journey of Life

The real journey of life begins with imparting of spiritual life to the Father’s house in glory, from the woes of earth to the wonders of Heaven, out of Adam’s dying race into God’s living family.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named — Ephesians 3:14-15

Spiritual life comes when a person is born again through hearing the Word and the regeneration of the Holy Spirit in placing us into the family of God (II Cor. 5:17; I Pet. 1:23). Without this new birth, one cannot see or enter the kingdom of God (John 3:3-5). The new birth results in one becoming “Heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ” (Rom. 8:17); “A new creation in Christ “ (II Cor. 5:17); “First fruits of his creatures” (Jas. 1:18); “To an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled and that fades not away, reserved in heaven for you” (I Pet. 1:3). These are just a few of the promises of spiritual life with Christ.

This new birth brings a release from the bondage of sin to freedom in Christ.

and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free…So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. — John 8:32, 36

We find fulfillment in the Lord alone. Augustine said, “Our souls were made for God, and we shall not rest until we rest in God.”

In the new birth, there is a transformation of the soul from death to life; from sin to salvation. The believer becomes a partaker of the very nature of God (II Pet. 1:4). The relationship in redemption results in the believer now having eternal life (John 17:3).

Even though being born again brings new life in Christ, the believer will experience trials and trouble on their journey home. Vance Havner said, “In times of trouble, I have often felt like the last rose of summer in a hailstorm.” He also said, “In our deepest needs and trials, we will find ourselves shipwrecked on God and stranded on omnipotence.”

Despite the fact that we are sometimes beset by unrealized hopes and unfulfilled dreams, the destination of our spiritual journey will be glorious and wonderful.

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. — John 14:1-3

We do not often need new truth, but we do need to be reminded of the truth we know and freshly apply it to our lives.

New Year, Renewed Application

David has the proper view of God’s Word: not only does it warn us against sin, but it also offers great reward for following God’s rules. His rules are given for our benefit and flourishing.
