He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. Titus 1:9
Many people look down on doctrine or think it is too difficult to understand. Doctrine simply defined is: a belief or set beliefs. Sound doctrine is found in God’s Word and is a beautiful thing. It is the embodiment of God's glory and grace like good, nutritious wholesome, spiritual food. It is knowledge from which we learn, making us wise for the best choices in life. It gives us inward strength like that of a lion for triumphs and victories along the path of our earthly journey. It has lasting and enduring blessings for our souls.
Sound doctrine is held by faithful men who stand true to the precepts of Scripture. Doctrine is a gift of God through Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit, assisting us to understand the Bible. True understanding of sound doctrine leads to sound living. God’s Word is truth and enables us to stand firm in the turbulent society we live in.
Sound doctrine is the testimony of the Gospel going out abroad, knowing that servants around the world are proclaiming the message of eternal life in Christ, unadulterated by the infirmities of human philosophy. The truth of God’s word is not bound or restricted by cultural differences.
The Word of God declares what is right, directs the life, and delights the heart. There is no substitute for His Word.
Why is sound doctrine so important? The world gives us conflicting and confusing messages. Our sin nature seeks to lead us astray. When we are left to our own devices, we will stumble. Sound doctrine gives us a solid foundation to stand on.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil. Proverbs 3:5—7
Sound doctrine is beautiful because it is a gift from God and helps keep us on the right path. Praise God for His Word and the grace He gives through the Holy Spirit to enable us to live according to His Word. May we hold tightly to the truth of God’s Word as we go through this week.
