STEADFAST LOVE

God’s love endures forever. Because of His eternal love, we have a sure hope of an eternal future. God’s love is not temporary or conditional; it is steadfast. His love is constant and unwavering.

His love will not fade away or diminish with time. We often do not spend enough time meditating on this truth. We take His love for granted, or it becomes an afterthought.

Psalm 136 is an amazing reflection on God’s love. Its repetition is a reminder to us about how pervasive God’s love is in our lives. The psalmist (likely David) reflects on the love of God and how God continually showed His love to Israel.

It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures forever;

and rescued us from our foes, for his steadfast love endures forever;

he who gives food to all flesh, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever. — Psalm 136:23-26

The Psalm ends with a summation of all that God has done. These are truths that we should reflect on because God’s character has not changed. He works in similar ways in our lives today.

God is the One who took notice of us. He is the One who loved us first. We did not earn His love or deserve it. He took notice of us in our low estate. God does not forget His children. He did this because His steadfast love endures forever.

God is the One who rescues us from opposition. He rescues us because He loves us. Apart from Him we would fail. He watches over us because His steadfast love endures forever.

God is the One who provides for us. We are completely dependent upon Him even though we often forget this. He is the Creator of all things and provides for all of His creation. God is love.

The final verse of the psalm tells us how we should respond in light of all that God does: give thanks. Give thanks to God because His love endures forever. His love does not change or fluctuate. Give thanks to Him for loving you. Praise Him for how He has rescued you and provided for you. Take time today to give thanks to God.
