OVERFLOWING

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. — Psalm 23:5 CSB

David transitions from his insights into shepherding to his insights from being a king. Not only is the Lord our Shepherd, but He is our King. The focus in the psalm switches from the fields and pastures to a banquet table. It is a beautiful transition because this is our hope.

Regardless of where we find ourselves, about to enter a dark valley, in the midst of one, or just coming out of one, God is faithful. David now paints a picture of a victory feast that awaits those who trust in the Lord. This victory feast is not something we earn or merit; in fact, it is only assured because of God’s faithfulness. Psalm 89 helps us understand this picture and the transition from the rod of the Lord to the grace of God.

if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments, then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes, but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips.— Psalm 89:31-34

God is faithful. As we just saw in verse 4, the Lord uses the rod of correction for our good. He protects us from dangers outside of ourselves and disciplines us from the dangers that dwell within. As we walk through dark valleys and hard times, we have hope and joy because we know what lies ahead. He is preparing a table for His children. We experience some of this blessing here on earth, but it will not be fully realized until we are with Him in glory. This promise has not changed. The things of this world can cause us to worry and fear, yet we need to set our hearts on God.

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. — John 14:1-3

We have victory through Jesus. David realized his victory came through the Lord. David would not fully vanquish his enemies through military force; the Lord would defeat them. The Lord is the One who guides us through dark valleys and the one who sets up the victory table. He will overcome our enemies and fully defeat them. In His mercy and grace, God rejoices over us and will allow us to take part in His victory table.

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. — Zephaniah 3:17

When we reflect on all that God promises to His children, we come to realize that our cup is truly overflowing.

GOD'S UNFAILING YEARS

God’s faithfulness to His saints is also shown. So much of our time is given over to fretting, worrying, doubting, stewing. Someone has said, “Why worry when you can pray.”

THE CHRISTIAN WALK

The believer must practice what he believes. The apostle John concurred: “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and truth” (I John 3:16). A Christian must back up

WINGS AS EAGLES

In flight, the eagle often escapes danger by riding a protective air current or by being lifted to safety in a thermal updraft. The believer also finds refuge from the storms of life in Christ's love
