Full Assurance

The doctrine of the assurance of the believer is also known as the security of the believer. Isaiah 32:17 uses the term “assurance forever.”

By using the term, “full assurance,” we refer to the doctrine of the assurance of the believer which means that one who is really saved will never be lost and go to hell but will remain in a state of salvation and go to heaven.

Some would argue that we can lose our salvation. However, let us look at a few passages of Scripture that would show the believer's security.

The Nature of Life Given

When we are saved, what kind of life does God give us? The Lord gives us eternal life. “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10.28) Dr. Kenneth Wuest translates the verse as follows: “And I give to them life eternal and they shall never positively not perish, never. And no one will snatch them by force out of my hand.”

This means that no one; no angel, no demon, no devil, no man shall be able to destroy our salvation. Thus, the safety of our souls is eternally secured by the power of God. Salvation includes all that God does for the sinner who believes, from the time he trusts Christ for salvation on earth until he is glorified in heaven. The glorification aspect of our redemption means the vesting of our mortal bodies with immortality (Rom. 8:23; I Cor. 15:51-54; Phil. 3:21; I John 3:2).

Salvation is the gift of eternal life. If eternal life could be lost, it would not be eternal life (John 5:24). Salvation is a present possession and is entirely by grace. Therefore, it is unconditional and its completion rests with God (Phil. 1:6; II Tim. 1:12).

Isaiah speaks of the abiding permanency of our salvation.  “Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner, but My salvation will be forever and My righteousness will never be dismayed.” (Is 51:6)

The word “abolish” refers to a “knock-out blow.” It is utterly impossible for God to receive such a blow since He is sovereign. Therefore, the believer is safe as long as God is God. Since God cannot cease to be sovereign, a Christian is eternally safe.

THE LORD WANTS US TO KNOW

The Lord wants us to know that we have passed from death unto life, and that we have eternal life. “ I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may have eternal life.” (1 John 5:13)

Christian, whoever and wherever you are, do not doubt your heavenly Father any longer. Do not allow Satan to rob you of blessings and real joy. If you are trusting the Lord Jesus for salvation, accept the fact of the assurance of your soul.

Dear reader, are you saved? Do you know that you are saved? Are you afraid to meet God? Is your heart weary and burdened? Do you want to know how to be saved and have eternal life? I can tell you.

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” Acts 16:31
